Eric stopped a few feet away from Tanner and continued to listen. He nodded his head slowly in approval of her grasp of the process. Tanner pointed to a device sitting on top of one of the buildings in the model.

“These towers work in pairs to send the aura energy beams out in a sweeping pattern. When the beams sweep across a vampire, the vampire’s location is determined using a triangulation method and logged in a database.” She stopped and looked at Eric. “Wouldn’t it be better to use GPS to track their locations?

“Yes, it would, but we have not been able to integrate this system with GPS yet. Are you done?” he asked.

“Pretty much. I’d just add that the project has finally gotten the upper hand because the vampires can’t hide anymore.”

“That’s a very good summary of how it works,” Eric said with approval.

“Great,” Tanner said smiling. “Can I do the story?”

Eric was deadpan. “Absolutely not!!”

Tanner frowned. “Why not?”

“As soon as you open your mouth, the vampires will know all about the system and the towers will be their number one target. And if you tell them that they can’t hide, they’ll start leaving town.”

“Some of them are leaving anyway,” she shot back defensively.

“The number of vampires leaving now is nothing compared to what would happen if you got on television and yelled ‘FIRE’. We need to contain them and hit them hard before the bulk of them find out what we’re doing. So no way can you do a story on this. Not now,” Eric said with finality.

Tanner frowned, and then threw up her hand. “Okay. But I’ve got to give the public something. What else do you have?”
